Abstract

Objective: To determine the level of knowledge about glaucoma in non-glaucoma patients of the
ophthalmology service of the EsSalud Augusto Hernández Mendoza de Ica Hospital, between the months of July and December 2018. Materials and methods: The type of research is observational, transversal, descriptive and correlational. 374 non-glaucomatous patients were surveyed using the instrument validated in Spanish on knowledge in glaucoma performed by Munayco et al. The data processing used Microsoft Excel 2016 and SPSS v20. Results: 374 people were included in the participation of the questionnaire, of which 61.5% were qualified with a low level of knowledge, 14.4% a medium level of
knowledge and 24.1% of respondents with a high level. When assessing the overall scores obtained in the
questionnaire, the average was 54.37 points, with minimum and maximum values of 9 and 89 points
respectively. A significant relationship was found between the level of knowledge with sex (p = 0.003), with
the degree of instruction (p = 0.001), the origin (p = 0.000) and the presence of some comorbidity (p =
0.001), age (p = 0.005) and with economic dependence (p = 0.027). Conclusions: The level of knowledge
in the population studied is low. Improving this level of knowledge could help in the early detection of the
disease.
