Type 2 diabetes mellitus as a risk factor for mortality from COVID-19

Introduction: There are several studies that associate type 2 diabetes mellitus with a higher mortality from
covid-19, attributing it to a high risk, for this reason, this meta-analysis is carried out in 9 studies mostly
developed in China. Objective: To determine the strength in which type 2 diabetes mellitus is associated with mortality from Covid-19. Material and methods: Review article developed in 9 studies that meet the eligibility criteria, on the basis of being able to be reproducible and that they have the data corresponding to the study, these works were selected from 50 studies related to the issue of which 41 did not present the requirements for be eligible. The data of the investigations that had the eligibility requirements were tabulated in the Excel program from where they were exported to the Epidat 3.1 statistical program. Heterogeneity statistics, forest plot graphs,
publication biases, funnes plots and sensitivity analysis were calculated. Results: The research shows a heterogeneity of 52.58% Cochran Q test 16,872, p value = 0.032 Random effects model showed an overall OR of 1,933 (95% CI: 1,488 - 2,511. The Begg test with its statistic Z = 1.772 Value p = 0.076, Egger's test with its statistic t = 1.764 Value p = 0.121. Conclusions: The 9 studies analyzed show an overall OR of 1,933 (95% CI of 1,488 - 2,511) over a total sample of 11,413 patients. Having type 2 diabetes mellitus increases the probability of mortality from covid - 19 by 0.9 times more than if this pathology were not present in the patient with covid - 19.
