Abstract

The COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019) pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus, type 2), is a multisystemic disease, of relevance not only because of the respiratory symptoms it causes, but also because of the presence of multiple extra-pulmonary signs and symptoms, characterized by variable anatomical distribution,
frequency and intensity. In COVID-19 genesis, although it stands out the role of ECA-2 receptors (Angiotensin
Converting Enzyme type II), other mediators are important, such as: TMPRSS-2 (Transmembrane Serine Proteinase type 2) and Cathepsins B and L. Such molecular components have their physiopathological role in the cellular interaction with SARS-CoV-2,
through the different stages of the viral replication cycle with diverse clinical expression. Nowadays, scientific evidence highlights that the diverse clinical-radiological manifestations are a consequence of the systemic thromboinflammatory commitment conditioned by
SARS-CoV-2, being such event the key for the physiopathological genesis of COVID-19. In this
context, the aim of this review article is to highlight the multiple radiological findings concerning abdominal structures, both digestive and non-digestive.
