Service-Learning Experience: Anorexia and bulimia in a school in Lima - Peru

Abstract

Objective: To raise awareness of bulimia and anorexia nervosa among adolescents from 14 to 17 years old through a training workshop in a school in Lima- Peru, year 2021. Method: We used the APS (Service Learning). The study was descriptive, cross-sectional, conducted in 36 adolescents from 3rd to 5th year of high school. Talks were held combining a situational diagnosis and post-intervention results. The first session included concepts of anorexia and bulimia, risk factors. In the second session, data on the increase of cases in the current context, what to do when faced with a case of anorexia and bulimia. For the third session, the importance of having a good self-esteem, body image and social pressure; for our fourth and last session, we addressed the nutritional pyramid, healthy eating habits, and the importance of sports. Results: We had 24 women and 11 men participants. Of the 12 questions for 36 participants (432 responses), the correct answers (C) were 318 /432, and incorrect answers (I) were 114/432. The KS test for the corrrect answers does not have a normal distribution, so there is a significant relationship between pre-test and post-test, while for the incorrect answers, it has a normal distribution so there is no significant relationship between both variables. Conclusion: The progress of our participants was demonstrated with the evaluations presented, which shows the impact of this PSA.
