Sociodemographic factors and tobacco consumption in students of the 4th and 5th graduate secondary of the Teodosio Franco GarcÌa educational institution in the year 2018

Objective: To determine the sociodemographic factors associated with tobacco consumption among fourth and fifth-grade high school students at Teodosio Franco García Institution. Materials and Methods: A basic, cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted to identify characteristics within a specific population of adolescents. The study population consisted of 152 fourth and fifth-grade high school students from a school in the city of Ica, Peru. Data collection was performed using a survey with a questionnaire adapted from the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS).Results: The sample included 85 fourth-grade students (52.92%) and 67 fifth-grade students (44.08%). The overall sample comprised 54.61% males and 45.39% females.Conclusions: A statistically significant difference was found between adolescents who had consumed cigarettes and those who had not, in relation to sports participation, with a p-value of 0.0039. It is recommended to develop more educational interventions focused on the prevention and consequences of tobacco consumption.
