Abstract

Objective: To analyze the relationship between alcohol consumption and spirituality in high school adolescents from a rural community in southern Veracruz, Mexico. Material and Methods: Cross-sectional and descriptive-correlational study. Population: 149 adolescents. Sample: 110 students. Probabilistic, stratified random sampling. Instruments: Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) and the Spirituality Questionnaire (Parsian & Dunning, 2009). Results: 62.7% of the students had consumed alcohol at some time in their lives and 42.5% in the last year. In spirituality, 50% of the adolescents reported low level, 32.7% medium and 17.3% high. The pattern of dependent alcohol consumption was found only in males with 19%. Adolescents with a low-risk pattern presented higher percentages of medium (76.9%) and high (66.7%) levels of spirituality; young people with dependent consumption reported low spirituality (12.9%). A negative and statistically significant relationship was found between general spirituality and alcohol consumption (r=-,241, p=<0.05). Conclusions: Adolescents from rural community with dependent consumption presented lower levels of spirituality and a negative relationship was found between alcohol consumption and spirituality, so it is suggested as a protective factor of consumption
