Abstract

Objective: Determine the maternal reasons for alcohol consumption and its associated factors in migrant mothers.

Methods: Observational, prospective, relational study. The sample consisted of 145 migrant mothers from a populated center in Ica, Peru. A questionnaire on sociodemographic variables, the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21), and a validated scale of maternal reasons for alcohol consumption (M-DMS) were administered. Differences were analyzed using the chi-square test, and generalized linear Poisson family models with a logarithmic link function were applied to identify associations.

Results: Among migrant mothers, 44.1% have a higher motivation to consume alcoholic beverages. Associated factors identified were marital status as widow (OR=2.04; 95% CI: 1.27–3.26) and cohabiting (OR=1.28; 95% CI: 0.08–2.32), having 1 to 2 children (OR=1.48; 95% CI: 1.02–2.16), and having a primary school education (OR=2.16; 95% CI: 1.44–3.22). Likewise, stress was the only psychological factor with a significant association (OR=2.67; 95% CI: 1.41–5.02).

Conclusions: Among migrant mothers, the maternal reasons for alcohol consumption are high and are influenced by specific social and emotional conditions. It is recommended to implement community interventions with an intercultural and gender-based approach, aimed at reducing the associated risk factors.
